This most prominent member of the famous Huxley family of England spent the part of his life from 1937 in Los Angeles in the United States until his death. Best known for his novels and wide-ranging output of essays, he also published short stories, poetry, travel writing, and film stories and scripts.
Through novels and essays, Huxley functioned as an examiner and sometimes critic of social mores, norms and ideals. Spiritual subjects, such as parapsychology and philosophical mysticism, interested Huxley, a humanist, towards the end of his life.

1984 is the story of Winston Smith, a middle aged man living under a terrorizing and oppressive government that limits all personal freedoms through the use of constant surveillance by ‘telescreens’ and the threat of Thought Police, an organization that cracks down on antigovernment thoughts in citizens. Winston works in the government’s Records Department of the Ministry of Truth. The Ministry of Truth's main objective is to falsify the records of the past that may cause the people to doubt the Party.
Though he is good at his job, he despises and questions the need to change history as the Party does. Furthermore, Winston also maintains a rebellious attitude toward Oceania's totalistic regime. Because of his anti-Party sentiments, Winston becomes aware that he will be found out and murdered by the Thought Police especially because he writes in his diary about the downfall of Oceania's primary figurehead Big Brother.
The book follows Winston as he observes various figures in the government's administration, including but not limited to O'Brien, an Inner Party member who Winston believes to be secretly engaged in rebellion; the symbolic figure Emmanuel Goldstein, a renowned rebel and scapegoat for the government's misdeeds; and a dark-heard women who Winston initially despises and judges to be a member of the Thought Police.
He begins to investigate the past, learning about a time before the Party through his own memories and attempting to interview proles (members of Oceania’s lowest class). During his investigations, Winston commits more and more thoughtcrime and becomes more and more aware of his imminent arrest for his ‘blasphemy’.
One day, Winston is walking down the street when he finds himself face-to-face with the dark-haired women. He learns that she has not only endeavored to meet him, but to also slip him a note containing the words “I love you”. Winston is dumbfounded by this and also goes to great lengths to arrange a meeting between them.
Upon interaction, Winston and the woman, now known to be Julia, begin to see each other, engaging in an illegal affair. They switch their meeting places ever-so-often and eventually find themselves meeting routinely in the attic of a prole shop belonging to Mr. Charrington's. They engage in frequent adultery and come to love each other, a direct defiance of the government.
As their lives have become endangered by engaging in illegal affairs, Winston and Julia seek the help of O'Brien, who is learned to be a leader in the work against Big Brother or the Brotherhood. As the new members are sworn in they are told very little about the workings of the group that may lead to the downfall of the Brotherhood if they happen to be caught. O'Brien then arranges for Winston to be delivered a book written by Emmanuel Goldstein containing the main messages of the Brotherhood and an explanation and true history of the Party and its goals.

Eventually, Winston falls asleep reading the book to Julia in Mr. Charrington’s attic. The next morning, he is startled by the sharp sound of what is learned to be a telescreen hidden behind a painting. This preludes the Thought Police swarming onto their hiding place and separating Julia and Winston. They are both placed under custody and Mr. Charrington is revealed to be a member of the Thought Police.
Winston is then brought to what he presumes as the Ministry of Love where he and all other inmates are ill-treated and are constantly assaulted. They are always under constant surveillance and are squawked at when they engage in an outlawed activity, such as eating. There is no indication of time and Winston gets a new roommate every so often.
Many of them are sent to the mysterious Room 101, a room feared by all containing an unknown horror. Winston is unaware of the nature of his imprisonment, although he believes he is to be tortured. Winston is then met by O'Brien in his cell and, as Winston questions O'Brien about his appearance, he is struck by what he describes as the worst pain in his life and is knocked out.
He awakes strapped to a hard, cold table, incapable of motion. O'Brien greets him as he recovers consciousness. Winston is told that O'Brien is, in fact, not a part of the rebellious Brotherhood, but an interrogator for the Ministry of Love. O'Brien is able to monitor Winston's answers and his thoughts during interrogation rendering Winston incapable of lying to O'Brien without lying to himself. O'Brien’s and Winston’s ideas about the Party that differ extremely.
O'Brien discloses that while the government is out for power, its oppression frees the minds of its civilians and whatever the government says is true. While Winston argues that certain physical forces and realities are stronger than the government. Throughout the questioning, Winston is continually tortured.
As Winston eagerly awaits death, the interrogation continues, O'Brien claims that the Ministry of Love's sole intention is to convert rebels to love Big Brother and his admirations. Winston will not be vaporized until he learns to believe all Party propaganda. After months of brainwashing and torture, Winston is then sent to Room 101.
At this point, all Winston knows about the room is that it is feared among all inmates. He discovers that in Room 101, victims are tortured using their worst fears and for Winston it is rats. The rats creep forward and Winston is left with no other choice than to throw Julia, the only person he recognized that he had not yet betrayed, under the bus. He is released to the world as a shell of his former self instead of vaporized.
The story is recovered at the Chestnut Tree Cafe, the new popular hangout of Winston. As time pasts and Winston consumes his Victory Gin, the telescreen pronounces that a huge announcement will take place later in the day. He leaves the cafe and meets Julia once more. The excitement had completely vanished.
The love, that once ran so strong that they were willing to die for one another, was gone.
Julia explains that she had sold Winston out as well. The announcement conveys that Oceania has defeated Eurasia and Winston celebrates with his country along with his patrons at the cafe, recognizing his complete and utter love for Big Brother.
